Hi, I’m Alison Freeman. I’m a USA Triathlon Level II Certified Coach, and I built The Fueling Tool because I spend a lot of time building individualized, detailed fueling plans with my athletes.

Fueling is complicated. Knowing the carbs, fluid, and sodium you need to consume for your workout or race is just the first step. Finding the perfect recipe of fueling sources to meet those needs requires a virtual Rolodex of fueling products and a spreadsheet to perfectly balance your fueling choices in alignment with your targets.

There are tools that will tell you your daily nutritional needs, and some will even tell you what you need in order to fuel your workouts and races. But none will tell you exactly how to meet those needs. The Fueling Tool is built to provide that detail – to translate theoretical targets into practical fueling plans for training and racing.

    No — and that’s the point. MyFitnessPal, Fuelin’, and macro calculators focus on guiding daily nutrition: what you eat across a full day to meet dietary goals. The Fueling Tool exclusively solves the challenge of defining and quantifying fueling sources for training and racing — setting specific fueling targets and translating those targets to an hourly-serving-by-source recipe for fueling during a workout or race to sustain your performance. Different goal, different variables, different tool.

  • Do I need to know anything about sports nutrition to use this?

    Nope. The Fueling Tool comes with science-backed default targets for carbohydrates, fluids, and sodium, plus guidance on how to use them. You can build a fueling plan right away even if you’ve never thought about race-day nutrition before. As you learn more, you can adjust your targets.

  • What sports is it built for?

    It’s primarily designed for endurance sports — running, cycling, and triathlon — where fueling during effort is critical. If you’re doing any event lasting more than 90 minutes, this tool is for you.

  • What do I get with the Free Edition vs what requires a paid membership?

    The Free Edition gives you the default source library, research-backed targets, and the ability to build single-use fueling plans — the full planning workflow. A paid Athlete Edition membership unlocks custom sources, personalized targets, the ability to save and print fueling plans, and a place to store sweat test results. The Free Edition is a great place to start.

  • What happens if I cancel my membership?

    If you cancel a paid Athlete Edition membership, your account transitions to the Free Edition membership. Your saved fueling plans, custom sources, and individualized targets will no longer be accessible, but will be saved should you decide to return to the Athlete Edition membership.

  • Can I use this with my athletes as a coach?

    Yes. Many coaches use The Fueling Tool to build personalized fueling plans with or for their athletes, sharing printable versions of plans or giving clients a tool they can refine across a training season. It pairs naturally with Insight CoachPro if you’re already using that for athlete management.

  • How does The Fueling Tool integrate with Insight CoachPro?

    If you’re already using Insight CoachPro for athlete management, the Fueling Tool is built into the app. Your athletes can use the Free or Athlete Edition of The Fueling Tool so you both can share fueling plans. (coming soon)
